GENETIC
TRAITS (Lot 4135)
While shopping for groceries back in 2003, I noticed that some of the apples I had been buying for several years had a recurring physical characteristic—a “second bottom”—protruding from the sides or tops. Focusing on the
fruit associated with the story of the Garden of Eden, I decided to photograph nine of the apples to document this deviation as a way to raise questions about genetic mutation as a phenomenon of scientific engineering or natural selection, and its potential to redefine what we perceive as “normal” or "natural."
